  • Origin : a zoonotic virus primarily carried by fruit bats. It can also infect pigs and horses.
  • Transmission :
  1. Animal - to - Human : Contact with infected animals or consuming food contaminated by bat secretions.
  2. Human - to - Human : Close contact with the body fluids of an infected person, often in family or healthcare settings.
  • Symptoms : Range from asymptomatic to severe respiratory infection  and fatal encephalitis (brain swelling).
  • Fatality Rate : Estimated between 40% and 75%.
PREVENTION and TREATMENT
  • Treatment : There are currently no licensed vaccines or specific drugs for Nipah virus. Care is focused on intensive supportive therapy to manage symptoms.
  • WHO Advice :
  1. Boil raw date palm juice and thoroughly wash / peel fruits.
  2. Discard fruits with signs of bat bites.
  3. Avoid unprotected physical contact with infected individuals and practice regular hand washing.
